Carers Week 2026: Recognising the Vital Contribution of Unpaid Carers

Carers Week 2026 (8–14 June) is an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution unpaid carers make every day across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Cardiff and Vale Regional Partnership Board (RPB) brings together Cardiff Council, Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, third sector organisations and people with lived experience to improve support for unpaid carers across the region. Through the Cardiff and Vale Unpaid Carers Board, partners work together to coordinate funding, strengthen local practice and ensure services continue to meet carers’ needs.

The Cardiff and Vale Unpaid Carers Charter, launched in 2023, reflects a shared commitment to recognising and supporting unpaid carers of all ages. The Charter has helped improve awareness, encourage earlier identification of carers and promote a more consistent approach to support across services.

Over the past year, regional programmes have continued to make a positive difference. During 2024/25, the Carers Information Service supported almost 2,000 unpaid carers, including 690 newly identified carers, while the Short Breaks Programme enabled more than 1,200 carers to access flexible respite opportunities. Carer awareness has also been strengthened through the Carer Friendly and Young Carers in Schools programmes, with more than 280 education staff trained across the region.

The RPB has also supported the delivery of Young Carers and Young Carers in Schools programmes. In April, over 163 young carers attended a celebration event at St Cyres School, organised by Cardiff Council, Vale of Glamorgan Council, TuVida and the YMCA. The event provided young carers with an opportunity to relax, connect with peers and receive recognition for the important role they play within their families and communities.

As part of Carers Week 2026, Cardiff and Vale RPB is launching a new carers wellbeing resource. Co-produced with unpaid carers and partner organisations, the resource includes a practical guide and accompanying website providing information, advice and signposting to support carers’ wellbeing and their caring role.

Residents are also invited to attend a Carers Week Celebration and Information Fayre, organised through the Building Carer Friendly Communities programme. The event will bring together carers, local organisations and support services, offering information, advice, wellbeing support and the opportunity to connect with others over a complimentary afternoon tea.

This Carers Week, we thank every unpaid carer across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan for the difference they make every day. Your contribution is recognised, valued and appreciated.
