Celebrating Our Young Carers – A Day of Joy, Recognition and Community

On Saturday 22nd March, 130 inspirational young carers from across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan came together for a vibrant day of celebration and fun, hosted at East Moors Youth Centre. Organised by Cardiff Council, Vale of Glamorgan Council and YMCA Vale Young Carers, the event was a heartfelt tribute to the remarkable contributions these young people make to their families and communities.

The day began with a special welcome – non-alcoholic bubbles and a transformed venue bursting with colour, decorations, and excitement. From the moment they walked through the door, young carers were treated to a break from their everyday responsibilities and immersed in a world designed just for them. Activities ranged from a high-energy disco with dazzling lights to more laid-back zones offering badgemaking, nail painting, games, circus skills, and a dedicated quiet space for those needing a peaceful moment. Every detail was carefully planned to ensure each young person felt seen, celebrated, and valued.

Colleagues from all organisations volunteered their time, creating a sense of warmth and unity throughout the event. Their energy and dedication made a real impression on attendees and organisers alike, highlighting the strength of partnership working across the region. As a lasting memento, each young carer received a personalised certificate recognising their role, along with a goody bag to take home – a small token of appreciation for the big impact they make every day.

Reflecting on the event, Charles Janczewski, Chair of Cardiff and Vale UHB and Cardiff and Vale Regional Partnership Board said: “It was truly inspiring to hear that so many young carers from both Cardiff and the Vale came together at this wonderful event. Their resilience, compassion and strength are humbling, and we are proud to celebrate and support them. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make the day such a success — especially the dedicated teams and youth workers who continue to go above and beyond for unpaid and young carers across our region. Events such as these are so important to show young carers that their voices matter, their contributions are valued, and we remain firmly committed to supporting you. Thank you”

This event was more than a celebration – it was a powerful reminder of the resilience, kindness, and strength of young carers in our community. A huge thank you goes out to the teams who made the day possible, and most importantly, to the young carers themselves – your compassion and courage truly deserve the spotlight.
